Travel Fellowship Awards
Each year, the Society of Biological Psychiatry selects outstanding Early Career Investigators and Predoctoral Learners to participate in the prestigious Travel Fellowship Award Program. These awards recognize excellence in scholarly activity by providing financial support to awardees to attend the SOBP Annual Meeting. Each award includes:
- A travel stipend of $2,000 USD to assist with travel and other expenses for attending the Annual Meeting in the award year.
- Special recognition during the Annual Meeting.
- Waived registration fees for:
- The Annual Meeting in the award year.
- The next two consecutive Annual Meetings (no financial stipend provided).
- Exclusive programming tailored to awardees, in addition to the standard educational offerings at the Annual Meeting in the award year.
- Individualized mentorship by an SOBP member offering personalized guidance during the Annual Meeting in the award year.
- Abstract fees and SOBP member sponsor waived for oral or poster abstract submission at the Annual Meeting in the award year.
These awards are financial supported by the SOBP with contribution from Elsevier, the publisher of the Society’s journals.
Travel Fellowship Award – Early Career Investigator – North America
Purpose
This award supports outstanding junior researchers from institutions located in Canada, Mexico and the USA by providing financial assistance to attend the Society’s Annual Meeting.
Eligibility
- No requirement for applicants to be SOBP members
- Be affiliated with a university, department, or institute in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico.
- Be within ten (10) years of completing their terminal research degree or medical residency at the time of application; Exceptions to this rule may be considered on a case-by-case basis if a compelling reason for a prolonged career trajectory is provided.
- Hold an academic rank no higher than Assistant Professor (or equivalent).
- Have not yet established independent research funding that would indicate senior status.
- Individuals with MD-PhD degrees who have previously won a Travel Fellowship Award in graduate school are eligible to apply for a second award.
Application Process
- The applicants themselves are required to submit their application using the submission portal on the conference website.
- A complete application package should include
- One letter of support (max 2 pages) from the applicant’s Department Chair, Program Chair, or faculty mentor. The letter does not need to be from an SOBP member
- A biosketch outlining the applicants educational background and scholarly activities (max 5 pages)
- A personal statement (max 1 page) outlining career interests and objectives, including how attendance at the SOBP Annual Meeting will support the applicant’s professional growth.
- The personal statement should include, if applicable, any circumstances that have extended the applicant’s career trajectory beyond the 10-year eligibility limit, along with a brief explanation for consideration.
Selection Process
- All applications are reviewed and evaluated by the Travel Award Committee
- Evaluation is based on the following criteria:
- Scientific and academic merit, including the strength of their personal statement.
- Potential impact of conference attendance on their career.
- Financial need for travel support.
- Applicants will be notified by early December regarding award decisions.
Responsibilities of Awardees
- Awardees must
- confirm attendance within one (1) week of receiving their award notification.
- submit and present a well-developed abstract at the Annual Meeting in the award year; abstract submission fees and SOPB-member sponsorship are waived.
- attend the entire Annual Meeting in the award year and participate in events honoring SOBP Travel Award recipients
- participate in the SOBP mentor/mentee program and other activities designed for the recipients of this award.
Deferment Policy: An award may be deferred for one year under the following circumstances: birth or adoption of a child; care responsibilities linked to serious health conditions of a family member or serious illness of the awardee. In any case, the awardee must provide the reasons in writing to sobp@sobp.org
Travel Fellowship Award – Early Career Investigator – International

This award supports outstanding junior researchers from institutions located anywhere in the world (except Canada, Mexico and the USA) by providing financial assistance to attend the Society’s Annual Meeting.

Travel Fellowship Award – Predoctoral – International
Purpose
This award supports outstanding predoctoral learners from institutions located anywhere in the world by providing financial assistance to attend the Society’s Annual Meeting.
Eligibility
- No requirement for applicants to be SOBP members
- Applicants must be enrolled as Predoctoral Scholars in an academic program (MD, MD/PhD, PhD, PsyD, PharmD, MA and MS Students, etc) from any university, graduate study department or institute anywhere in the world
Application Process
- The applicants themselves are required to submit their application using the submission portal on the conference website.
- A complete application package should include
- A letter from the applicant’s institution confirming that the student is in good academic standing.
- A biosketch outlining the applicants educational background and scholarly activities (max 5 pages)
- One letter of support (max 2 pages) from the applicant’s Department Chair, Program Chair, or faculty mentor describing the applicant’s interest in biological psychiatry. The letter does not need to be from an SOBP member.
- A personal statement (max 1 page) outlining career interests and objectives, including how attendance at the SOBP Annual Meeting will support the applicant’s professional growth.
